Russians are Coming!
This photo from the cover of our own magazine is the submission to the Fotki contest, "Sports"

The invasion was started with our launch of Baraban.Com Magazine, http://Magazine.Baraban.Com in the summer of 2003. Victor took this photo while we were vacationing (ugh... on a business trip) in Mexico. I modified the picture slightly and we used it on the cover of our December 2003 issue. Those of you from Odessa, will be curious to learn that the name of the publication has since changed to Odesskiy Listok.

Thanks to everyone who voted! We placed better this time (204) than last (290), but only because there were fewer entries! :)

Ok...you've posted this in my guestbbok 3 times now...do you actually read peoples responses?

"Thanks for voting for our parachutist entry in the photo contest. Most people seem to either love it or hate it. I would be curious to know whay you hated it?"

A bad score doesn't mean I hate it...the actual photo was great...it's the blatant advertising I really disliked...just really tasteless and a bit tacky...it's like your whoring your business.

TanyaUnited States wrote: Friday, April 22, 2005 - 4:43 AM

Why I hated it... let's see....Because I thought it was a cheap shot at self-promotion? How's that for an answer? And yeah, it's advertising.

And as for the "quality" of the image...take away the letters and it would still be only an average picture. Sorry.

I didn't hate the picture but I felt that all the text in the photo was to distracting and took away from the quality of the photo.

Even if it is advertising, it's a great photograph and it doesn't violate any of the contest rules. So there is no reason to have a negative reaction and rate it with a 1, but to each their own, so...

Jek, they right.
It is an advertising. (maybe in a sport way, but still )

Obviously, fotki staff did not agree with your position!

OLKAUnited States wrote: Monday, April 18, 2005 - 5:42 PM

see i'm not the only one. yes there are no rules on 'advertising' in the contest, but give me a break.
whenever you put a brand name (or a name of the magazine in this case) it's advertizing. guess what sometimes you don't have to put a name on it and it's still advertizing. there are companies with excellent marketing teams that managed to associate a product with a symbol.

it's ok to advertize, perfectly fine. it was just not the right place to do it. this is a sports contest not 'cover page of the magazine' contest.

p.s. i did read the description to understand why in the world you would post it. and if the magazine is not called baraban anymore, but 'odesskiy listok' (big oop you changed the name) then you should have cut the head.
this is my opinion of course, so who cares right?

I read the rules several times before posting this picture. I do not see how it would violate the rules. Even if advertising was against the rules, this cover would be OK, as our publication is no longer called Baraban.Com Magazine. It is now, "Odesskiy Listok," instead.

Don't you affraid about disqualification from the contest? It is pure advertising of your brand magazine.
I hope - fotki.com thinks other than me ;) and they'll give you 'green light' for this - picture is great (BTW).
